As we all know, children come in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes they’ll stay the same for a while, then suddenly they change so quickly that what once was a pair of trousers becomes more like a pair of shorts overnight. So how do you ensure that their car seat adjusts with them, keeping them safe and comfortable at all times?
Most multi-group car seats will have an adjustable headrest as standard, but the Britax Römer EVOLVA 1-2-3 goes one step further, offering additional width adjustment, to allow your child to travel in comfort whatever their size.
But is it actually any good?
Installing the Britax Römer EVOLVA 1-2-3 was straightforward, which is a major benefit as, though the seat provides multiple recline modes, it does need to be removed, adjusted, and re-installed. This is not an unusual feature in car seats that cater for a range of ages as adjusting the chair with an older child in situ can cause difficulties, but it is therefore important that the installation process is as simple as possible, which Britax have ensured.
In terms of safety, when installed the seat feels robust in all recline modes, and the side wings, intended to project the child from a side-on collision, are heavily padded and reassuringly solid.
The seat’s width adjustment feature is unique and would certainly be of benefit of parents with larger children, or for those with children of varying ages who will be sharing a single seat. In both the narrowest and widest configurations the seat remained comfortable and robust, though parents will need to ensure that the seat is set to the narrowest configuration suitable for their child.
The feature that most impressed us and our little testers when reviewing the seat was the inclusion of Britax’s custom SAFE & CLICK technology, which tells you by a series of clicks when your the harness is tightened appropriately, taking the worry out of ensuring that your little one is securely fastened in their seat. Having tested it with three children of various sizes, we were satisfied that, by following the clicking alerts, all children reported being comfortable whilst being tightly fastened in their seats.
Finally, the extras – we were happy to see not only a drinks holder but a snack holder as well! This is a feature that we find is often lacking in UK car seats, but they are present and spacious on the Britax Römer EVOLVA 1-2-3, allowing you to ensure that your little passenger has something to keep themselves going on longer journeys.
So to summarise – would we recommend it?
The version of the Britax Römer EVOLVA 1-2-3 that we reviewed was not compatible with IsoFix, but this feature is available in the more expensive version of the seat, available here – as always, we would advise that if you can stretch your budget to the IsoFix model then it’s a fantastic additional safety feature, but this version of the seat will do the job admirably.
